What do you mean you played games in math today?

"We played games in math today!" is something you might hear more of this year. We are working to implement Guided Math in all classes this year.

What is Guided Math you ask?

Well, it is a structure during math class in which there is a whole groups lesson (sometimes), and small groups. Small groups will be different each day. Sometimes the students will be in small groups with their teacher, other times they will be doing an activity or playing a game with others or independently. This method allows the teachers to spend more time with student during the math time as they are able to see everyone in a small group an are able to give them the attention that they need while working on the day's lesson. Students are also able to review material from previous lessons through games and activities. These - many times- will be chosen for the students so it will help reinforce things they need to be reinforced, and other times they will be able to choose the activity on their own.

This structure allows the students some flexibility and lets them have fun with math. It also allows the teacher the change to really see how students are doing and give them that support when needed.

If your child seems excited about a game that they played at school, feel free to contact me or their teacher to ask about it. If possible we will let you know where we got it, or get you a copy of it to play at home.

Have fun with math!!!
