Mrs. Buscemi

What do all of these have in common? They are all pie/pi!

March 14th (3/14) is a math holiday! A day to celebrate all things pi! What is pi? Pi is the relationship between the circumference and diameter of a circle. C/d=π

In Mrs. Paoletta’s class we explored this relationship by measuring the circumference of a circle(C) with a piece of yarn; we then measured the diameter (d) with that piece to see how many times it would go across. If we did it right it should have been about 3 and 1/7 times (π)!

As we looked at the work the students did they noticed a few things:

The bigger the circle, the longer the strings

The longer the strings, the bigger the diameter

Everyone had 3 pieces of the same length string

and one shorter one

We were able to use what we know about rectangles and symmetry to help us understand new vocabulary.

The circumference of a circle is like the perimeter

of a rectangle – it measures the outside.

The diameter of the circle is a line of symmetry,

and there are an infinite number of them.

When we were done we watched a video on pi

It was an interesting and fun activity for a special math day!!!
